Flyers fiction- Brayden (pt 5)
it’s been a while! haha but now getting back into the groove of things!
I spent over an hour getting ready for this party I was being dragged to, and I was a little nervous to be honest. I wasn’t going to know anyone at this party either. I’d most likely be sitting on a squished couch with drunken people all around me knocking things over. I sighed and got over it, threw on some party clothes and made myself look decent.
When we arrived Brayden took my hand and walked me to the back. The house was quite large and was also on the river. White lights coiled around the railings of the dock and outlined the stone path leading to it from the house, and there was a random two person swing hanging close to the shore on a giant tree.
Not many people were here, and it was much quieter than I though it’d be. Most of who that I saw sat at the table under an umbrella talking and laughing.
“Schenner!” Someone yelled. He stood out from the table and ran towards him with
his arms open. Brayden dropped my hand and received the man’s hug. It was
too dark for me to see the guy’s face. “Glad you came man. Haven’t seen
you in like three months!”
Brayden smiled and looked at me. “This is Addee.”
“Hii.” I said innocently and reached out my hand for a shake.
“Ah, yeah I’ve heard a lot about you. Every time I talk to this kid he mentions your name at least three times.” I laughed and looked over at Bray who was blushing and giving him a small push to shut up. “I’m Matt,” then a beautiful dark haired girl walked up behind him and he put his arm around her. “and this is Laura, my girlfriend. The other ones are over there goofing off.” We shook hands then walked over to the table to greet the other two. Erik was the shy one without a shirt on and Zac was the one wearing the aviators and throwing
peanuts at Erik.
I took a seat close to Brayden and didn’t say much. All the boys were acting like they were 12 or something. Me and Laura started talking and got to know each other well enough for me to not be as quiet.
“Did you bring your bathing suit?” She asked biting the shell off a peanut.
I swallowed down my bite and gave a weird look. “Brayden didn’t tell me-“
“It’s alright, you can borrow one of mine, but let’s go swim, I’m about to die of heat exhaustion.”
I followed her into the house and up the stairs to a bedroom that was covered in pictures of her and Matt, friends, family…dogs? She opened a drawer up, glanced at a few, then threw one at me.
“I’ll go change in the hallway bathroom, you can get this one.”
After I finished, I walked out and wasn’t sure what to do. I walked around the room taking a look at all the pictures. She and Matt must have been together for a long time because in some of them, Matt almost looked 16. I ran across one picture that made me stop and stare for a long time, then Laura walked back in.
“Who’s this?” She came over and squinted at it, then laughed a little.
“That would be your boyfriend. Maybe about 14 or 15? Not sure what age…You ready?”
I nodded, and then we went back downstairs and walked outside. The sun
disappeared behind the clouds, turning the sky to a dark purplish pink. The temperature dropped to a nice non humid degree, but the bugs were still harsh.
We ran passed the boys and jumped as far we could off the dock. Then Matt and Brayden came in behind us, but Erik and Zac took their times stripping down to their boxers.
“Lets have a huge game of chicken!” Laura insisted.
“And have Erik’s penis on the back of my neck? Hell no.” Zac said sitting on the edge of the dock and swinging his feet above the water.
“We’ll take turns then. Me and Matt verses Addee and Brayden first. Which ever
girls’ man loses has to get on one of you, losers back.”
Me and Brayden won the first two rounds, then I had to get on Erik’s shoulders, then to Matt’s, then Zac’s for a couple rounds, and back to Brayden. I quit after my wrists began to feel like they would actually start to bend backwards. A cheesy game of marco polo didn’t last long either. It got cold after a while, so we went up and Matt started a fire for us. It kept the mosquitoes away at least.
Then I was blown away when I heard Brayden and Matt sing Story of a Girl. I knew Bray could sing and play guitar, just not THAT good. Matt was just as good too, he could hit some of those notes I didn’t know existed in a guy.
I migrated away from the group when the music stopped to call my Mom and check in. Wish I hadn’t though. Mom was crying over my Dad because he had a bad day at work and took it all out on my mom. “I’m gonna divorce his stupid ass.” She always threatened it, but never meant it. She may come around to it one of these days though. Whenever my parents fought, my Dad would go to a bar downtown to get drunk and get a slap on the back from a friendly guy saying he was going through the same thing. One night he was too drunk to drive and almost got killed in an accident. Car had flipped three times and landed upside down in a
ditch. It was a lucky survive the doctor told him.
I walked to the swing and pushed off the ground for a good start. Why couldn’t my family be normal and over load their love to each other? It stressed me out too much. I took in a deep breath and leaned back letting my hair drag along the dirt.
I felt a heavy push on my back when I sat up, almost making me slip off.
“You alright?” Brayden stopped the swing and bent his head over me.
I shrugged and gave a half smile. He scooted me over and put his arm around me, pulling me close. “What’s wrong?”
“My parents are fighting again.” I sighed. He didn’t say anything, just rubbed my arm and swung us. “I’m scared my mom will actually get a divorce with him, or my Dad will get in another car accident.” A tear fell and he immediately comforted me telling me everything would be okay. When the tears wouldn’t stop, he began humming Just The Girl, real slow and low into my ear. I closed my eyes and never let our hug go.
“You want me to take you back to the cabin?”
I shook my head no and wiped my the wetness off my face.
“You want anything then?”
“I’m kind of cold actually. Is there a blanket I could borrow from Matt?”
“I have my sweatshirt in the car, I’ll go get that. Why don’t you go back over by the fire while I get it…Damn! Look at your toes, they’re purple! A, go sit by the fire.” He ran off to his car and I laughed walking back to the fire. I loved how he took care of me.
Laura asked where I’d been, but I just gestured towards Brayden. She widened her eyes, taking it the wrong way.
